Kinovea on iPhone or Mac: what are the alternatives?

You have heard of Kinovea, you want to install it, and your computer is a Mac. Or you are looking for the app on iPhone. Kinovea only runs on Windows. The good news: on Mac, iPhone, Android and in the browser, there are solutions, and for team video, some go further than Kinovea.

What the Kinovea site says

Kinovea is free, open-source software, valued for movement analysis: slow motion, annotation, comparison of two synchronised videos, measurement of angles and distances. According to the download page on kinovea.org, accessed 9 October 2026:

  • System: Windows 7 to 11, with .NET Framework 4.8.
  • Apple-silicon Macs (M1, M2 and later): do not work, even with Parallels Desktop or other virtualisation.
  • Version offered: 2025.2.0, under the GPL v2 licence.

The official FAQ, accessed the same day, answers the question “Kinovea on Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone?” with a no: only Windows is supported. So there is no official Kinovea app on the App Store or Google Play, and listings claiming otherwise do not come from the publisher.

First, what you want to replace

“An alternative to Kinovea” covers two different needs:

  • Analysing a movement. A serve, a shot, a run-up, reviewed frame by frame, with a measured angle. This is Kinovea's historic territory.
  • Team video. Filming a match or a training session, isolating the plays, showing them to the players with a comment. Kinovea's site presents neither capture nor sharing with a team: you work on files, on a Windows computer.

For most team-sport coaches, it is the second need that counts.

For team video: TactiCam, on every device

TactiCam opens in the browser, with no installation from an app store: the same account works on iPhone, Android, Apple-silicon Mac or PC. It covers what Kinovea leaves aside:

  • Capture. The phone films on its tripod, in Rec Mode for the whole match or in Recall Mode: the coach taps after a play and TactiCam keeps the seconds before. A second phone acts as a remote from the bench.
  • Annotation. In the Video Room, you slow down to a quarter of the speed, step frame by frame, and draw arrows, zones and text on the video.
  • Sharing. The comment is anchored to the exact moment of the clip, and each player sees their clips on their phone, with a free-for-life account.
  • Import. A video filmed with another camera can be imported too.

On price: free-for-life Player account, 14-day coach trial with no credit card, then a team subscription in Swiss francs or euros. If the team does not continue, it moves to read-only and keeps all its clips viewable.

To measure a movement on Mac: Tracker and Photos

Tracker: free. According to its official site (accessed 9 October 2026), it is a free, open-source video analysis tool, under the GPL v3 licence, with installers for Windows, macOS and Linux. It tracks an object frame after frame and displays position, speed and acceleration. It is the closest free equivalent to the measurement side of Kinovea, with an interface designed for teaching physics.

The Mac Photos app: already installed. According to Apple's help (accessed 9 October 2026), it lets you trim a video and, since macOS Sequoia, change its speed if it was filmed at more than 30 frames per second.

On iPhone: individual analysis apps

OnForm. According to onform.com (accessed 9 October 2026), the app exists on iOS and Android, with a web version, a 14-day trial with no credit card, then a coach plan from 19.99 USD per month excluding tax per coach. It is designed for individual work between a coach and their athletes.

CoachNow. According to coachnow.com (accessed 9 October 2026), the app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play, with a 7-day trial; the entry plan is listed at $9.99 per month.

The right choice for your case

  • You coach a team and want to review matches and training with the players, on any device: TactiCam.
  • You measure an angle or a speed, on a Windows PC: Kinovea.
  • Same measuring need, on an Apple-silicon Mac: Tracker.
  • You follow athletes one by one: an individual app such as OnForm or CoachNow, after a trial.

For what comes next: how to run a session with the players is in the video session with your players, the method for reviewing a stroke in tennis in filming yourself at tennis, and the round-up of free tools in free video analysis software.
